  Sergei G. KazarianMy principal research interests are molecular spectroscopy of polymeric materials and supercritical fluids processing (Prof. Kazarian profile page). My overall strategy is to combine physical chemical studies with chemical engineering research and applications. I am interested in studying intermolecular interactions in polymers and supercritical fluids, using them to engineer new products and processes. I develop and apply in situspectroscopic methods to study supercritical fluid-polymer interactions, plasticisation of polymeric materials, supercritical fluid dyeing, drying, extraction and impregnation. In recent years my research interests have broadened to include preparation of polymer/drug formulations, supercritical fluids enhanced processing, rheology, separations using supercritical fluids and ionic liquids, confocal Raman microscopy and FTIR spectroscopic imaging.  We also develop and apply tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy to study carbon nanotubes abd nanostructured materials. Since 2001 we are developing new analytical approaches in FTIR spectroscopic imaging for obtaining chemical images of materials at the microscopic level. For example, we can now see the processes inside tablets when they dissolve, which helps pharmaceutical companies developing better products.  We also analyse the chemistry of fingerprints, benefitting police forensics, we study biomedical samples advancing healthcare diagnostics, and examine objects of cultural heritage, for the preservation of important artwork (Brochure). 

Multidisciplinary collaborations with colleagues from universities, industry and government institutions play an important role in my research focusing on solving problems with implications for health, the environment and security as well as those of significant industrial interest.  I am a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (United Kingdom) since 2004 and a Fellow of the Society for Applied Spectroscopy (USA) since 2014. I serve as an Associate Editor of Applied Spectroscopy, a member of Editorial Board of Vibrational Spectroscopy and a member of Editorial Advisory Board of Journal of Spectral Imaging. My research publications can be found in the Publications section, or on Google Scholar.
