Healthy Living Week

A week full of sports, physical activity, nutrition and wellbeing advice - all for free!

Action-packed and free for all, Healthy Living Week hosts a wide range activities for Imperial students and staff.

Activities include:

  • sports sessions
  • group exercise classes - some familiar and some new
  • nutritional advice
  • healthy eating options
  • wellbeing workshops and advice
  • Lots more!

This week provides the perfect opportunity to shake off post-Christmas indulgence, or start working on your resolutions whether you're focussing on your body or your mind..

Sports

There will be a range of sports activities throughout the week. Please note, all these sports sessions are drop in sessions and do not require booking. 

Badminton

This hugely popular game is less physically demanding than tennis, but requires quick feet and clever tactics.

Basketball

Perfect your slam dunk in this fun basketball session.

Wednesday 12.00–13.00 Sports Hall


Climbing Wall

A qualified instructor will be on hand to teach you the basics of climbing – all equipment provided.

Filipino Martial Arts 

Filipino martial arts is a very dynamic and effective martial art class, it is also excellent for conditioning the body and a different way to work-out. It’s is easy and fun to learn so give it a go!

Thursday 12.00–13.00 Ethos 5th Court


Gymnastics 

With expert coaching, learn a variety of techniques including skills such as rolls, cartwheels and front flips and the motions to build to those skills with equipment to assist where necessary. All abilites welcome.

Sunday 18.00–19.00 Charing Cross Sports Club (Meet at Ethos reception at 17.00)


LED Sabre Fencing 


LED Sabre is an exciting new sword art that appeals to all kinds of people, including martial artists, dancers, actors, sci-fi fans and more!

Tuesday 20.00–22.00 Sports Hall


Squash (Beginners)

Learn to play squash. There will be a qualified coach at all sessions to teach you the basics rules and skills to be able to play matches against other participants! All equipment provided, so just turn up.

Thursday 18.00–19.30 Ethos Squash Court


Swimming (Beginners) 

FastFins qualified swimming instructors will be on hand to teach you the basic swimming strokes and techniques to allow you to be able to swim 25m unaided.

Table Tennis

Table tennis is a fast, intense game requiring quick reflexes, good coordination and keen observation. It’s addictive and fun.

Tennis

Come and compete outdoors in Hyde Park in this traditional racket sport.

 Volleyball

Come and experience this fast-growing sport. The Imperial Volleyball club will lead this session with a mixture of skills development training followed by friendly games.

Physical activity

During Healthy Living Week we suspend out regular group class timetable and introduce an exclusive HLW schedule. 

Several of the regular classes will still be running, including:

  • Body pump
  • Energia spin
  • Pilates
  • more!

So if you've never tried any of these classes before, you can carry on attending once the week is over.

We also introduce a selection of classes that are only available during Healthy Living Week. Come and experience:

  • Yoga with tea

Nutrition

Could you drink only water for a whole week?

Forgo the tea and coffee, the soft drinks, fizzy drinks and alcohol for one week and switch solely to water. It might be harder than you think!

Join in alongside the Active Lifestyles team who will be taking part throughout Healthy Living Week and see what a difference it makes. 

Key benefits of keeping hydrated through water only include:

  • Healthier skin
  • Improve cognitive function
  • Improve weightloss
  • Other health benefits including joint protection, nutrient delivery and more!

Wellbeing

There are a range of wellbeing activities throughout the week including:

Smoking cessation advice

Counsellors will be providing information on the latest stop smoking treatments, providing lung age testing to see if your lungs are the same age as you and also offering carbon monoxide testing as well as guides and advice to help you quit.

Mental health first aid - light (Max 15 people - booking required)

The MHFA Lite course is a three-hour introduction course to mental health. It is a light touch introduction to anyone who may be interested in finding out more.

Our presentation educates and explores ways to manage your finances, helping you to take control. From understanding credit reports and budget planners, discover simple and straightforward ways to reduce your spending, increase your income and start planning for your future!

Dr Bike 

Bring your bike along for a FREE safety check. Expert bike mechanics will be on hand to assess what needs doing, adjust anything minor and advise on bigger jobs.

Body Fat Testing

A quick 10 minute assessment analysing blood pressure, resting heart rate, hips to weight ratio and weight.

40–50s Body MOT

The Occupational Health department will be undertaking cholesterol checks, blood pressure, height, weight, BMI, and offering lifestyle advice. The team will also be undertaking a 10 year cardiovascular and diabetes risk score.

Body MOT and Postural Assessment 

As well as your quick assessment, this Postural Assessment will assess how your muscles and joints work together.

Booking information

Many sessions have limited spaces - be sure to book these in advance as there is no guarantee that there will be a place available at the scheduled time. Classes can only be booked up to six days in advance.

BOOKING

Most activities requiring booking can be done so at Ethos reception in person or by phone. 

Below is a breakdown of booking requirements

  • All group classes must be booked at Ethos. 
  • Impetus sports are all drop in sessions. Should maximum numbers be reached, entry is determined on a first come, first served basis.
  • The majority of wellbeing activities are drop in sessions. However 3 sessions do require booking: Mental Health First Aid training and Taking Control of your Finances seminar are booked via Eventbrite. The 40–50s Body MOT requires a timed appointment and that can be made by contacting Occupational Health directly. See Wellbeing tab for full details.

CANCELLATION

If you can no longer attend a class you have booked, please contact Ethos reception as soon as possible so we can make your space available for those wishing to attend. 

ETHOS REGISTRATION

In order to book a class you need to register with Ethos. This is free to do for students and staff. Once you have registered you will then be able to use the online booking system to reserve your space.  Register at www.sports.ac.uk/memberships
