Creating links in Symplectic Elements

Creating links in Symplectic Elements

Whenever possible you should create links between your research outputs in Symplectic Elements and the related grants (that funded the research), facilities/equipment (that were used during the research) and research groups (that the research relates to). To do this, follow the prompt at the top of the home page and you will be taken to the new linking screen. Alternatively you can navigate to the linking screen from any output.

Linking to grants

By default you will be shown grants from the Research Grants Module of ICIS for which you are an investigator. It is also possible to search for any grant by name and create links to your outputs. Studentships are not recorded in the Research Grants Module in ICIS, so will not appear in your profile automatically and will need to be added manually from your home tab.

Linking to other publications

You can link multiple publications together if they are the result of the same grant or research project. You are shown publications that you have authored or co-authored, though you can also link to publications written by colleagues in your research group etc.

Linking to facilities

By default you’ll be shown the facilities you’re identified as a user of. You can remove this filter and use the search option to identify and link to other facilities listed in Symplectic. Being able to identify the outputs that resulted from use of a facility is valuable evidence to support funding bids to upgrade and improve facilities.

Linking to research groups

An administrator must have assigned you to an Organisational Structure (research group/ section/ cross faculty centres etc.), before you can link your publications to it. This information can be displayed on the group’s website as a searchable and filterable list. If you don’t see the Organisation Structures heading or your groups on the linking screen, or you want to find out more about adding a publication list to your group website, contact your Faculty Web Officer or consult How to link your publications to your Research Groups in Symplectic (pdf).
