Health and Safety in Research
- The College must provide a safe and healthy working environment for all staff, students and visitors.
- All College activities must be undertaken in a safe manner.
- The College must comply with the requirements of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act and other relevant legislation, including environmental protection.
Health and safety responsibilities for researchers include: conducting and recording risk assessments, ensuring staff and students have the relevant training and competencies to undertake the work safely; that effective control and emergency procedures are in place including in shared workspace; and reporting incidents and near misses.
“Safety” training in college management systems and procedures is important and includes not just the local training from the area manager or process owner but also:
- Mandatory training for “academic supervisors/PIs”
- Mandatory training for work with certain biological materials, ionising radiations, lasers – and undertaking risk assessments
- Faculties’ training for those who intend working in College laboratories
- Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2005 - COSHH
