My research is based on analysing the morphological stability of the active layer in polymer solar cells. Optimal morphology of acceptor and donor materials in photovoltaic devices is required for effective charge separation. I will be investigating the stability of small molecule acceptor PCBM in a benchmark polymer solar cell thin film – PCDTBT:PCBM mix. A photo reaction occurring in the film results in PCBM oligomers which have different diffusive and crystallisation characteristics. Our aim is to understand the rate of the photo induced oligomerization and how varying PCBM loading affects the stability of the active layer in a polymer solar cell.
