MRes in Neurotechnology
The MRes Neurotechnology is a one year full-time programme leading to the MRes award. The MRes forms the first year of the 4 year CDT Neurotechnology programme, but may also be taken as a stand-alone MRes.
Students take the following compulsory modules and practicals in the first term:
- Introduction to Neuroscience
- Statistics & Data Analysis
- Neurotechnology Journal Club
- Ethical & Social Implications of Neurotechnology
- Medical Device Entrepreneurship
- Machine Learning & Neural Computation
- Computational Methods training
Plus elective modules including:
- Optical Imaging Techniques
- Techniques in Molecular Bioengineering
- modules from the MSc in Biomedical Engineering
Students then carry out a 9-month research project, leading to submission of the MRes thesis in mid-September. The aim of the MRes is to develop all of the technical skills required to carry out the PhD work successfully and provide the student with a grounding in research.
Assessment for the modules listed above is via a combination of written and oral exams, written coursework and a poster presentation. Students must also submit brief reports on the elective modules attended (pass/fail mark only - these do not contribute to the overall degree score).
Additional assessed components are a literature review and thesis proposal submitted at the start of term 2, a poster presentation given at the CDT Research Symposium in term 3, the final MRes project submitted in mid-September (which comprises marks for research conduct and written thesis), plus an oral examination at the end of September.
The overall pass mark for the MRes is 50%, with the weighting of marks as described in the following table:
