Introduction

Bioengineering is at the interface of engineering and medicine. It is a discipline that advances knowledge in engineering, biology and medicine, and improves human health through cross-disciplinary activities that integrate the engineering sciences with the biomedical sciences and clinical practice. 

This one-year programme will educate future clinicians and medical leaders in engineering as applied to healthcare challenges and position them well for interdisciplinary careers at the forefront of healthcare innovation.

The programme is delivered across three terms and will comprise pre-sessional learning, core modules, elective modules and a group research project. Students will be able to specialise by choosing some elective modules to suit their individual interests. Throughout the year, collaboration with other bioengineering students is encouraged; specifically in the group research project, medics and bioengineers will work together to produce original research relating to real-world challenges.

The programme is available to medical students both from Imperial College London and from other institutions.
The programme is run by the Department of Bioengineering. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework exercise (2014), 95% of the Department's returned research was judged either world-leading or internationally excellent.

Please note that all applicants will normally be required to have achieved a minimum of Grade ‘B’ at A-Level in Mathematics, or equivalent.


Programme learning outcomes

On successful completion of the programme, students should:

  • Be able to recall, explain and deploy core skills in mathematics, programming, electrical engineering and mechanical engineering in a variety of bioengineering contexts.
  • Be able to apply engineering skills to analyse and solve problems in biomedical engineering
  • Be able to engage in the planning, design and implementation of collaborative multidisciplinary original research in biomedical engineering
  • Be able to appreciate the core underpinning physical science and engineering principles in healthcare and biomedicine.
  • Be able to access, analyse and critically evaluate scientific and engineering information sources and prepare oral and written reports.
  • Plan and develop laboratory investigations in biomedical engineering with due regard for health and safety and ethical considerations.
  • Use appropriate mathematical and computational approaches to address clinical and biomedical problems.
  • Be able to solve problems using critical thinking, evaluative and analytical skills.
  • Be able to communicate technical and non-technical information through a range of methods, to a variety of audiences.
  • Work well in multidisciplinary teams, by deploying skills such as teamwork, negotiation, leadership and advocacy.
  • Be able to take personal responsibility and work independently to initiate, plan and carry out projects, and manage their time and resources effectively.
