Molecular mechanisms The groups in this research theme use multidisciplinary approaches to address fundamental questions concerning molecular mechansims of disease. There is a focus on important cellular processes including ER stress, protein synthesis and turnover, and DNA damage responses. Malfunctions within the pathways regulating these processes, often resulting from mutations in key proteins, cause a range of human diseases including cancer. Viral or bacterial infections can subvert or re-purpose normal cellular processes in the interests of the pathogen. We use a variety of methodologies including biochemistry and biophysics, cell and molecular biology, X-ray crystallography and electron microscopy to understand the structures, mechanism and regulations of the key complexes involved.
