How are apprenticeships different to other roles that you are advertising?

An apprenticeship is a job with an accompanying skills development programme. It combines hands-on, workplace experience with formal, off-the-job training. Whether you’re looking for your first role or are already in employment, an apprenticeship offers the opportunity to build new skills and experience that will help you in your career. As an apprentice, you will spend at least 20% of your time (a day each week) on off-the-job training. You will follow an approved Apprenticeship Framework or Standard and will usually work towards a nationally recognised qualification.

Is there an upper age limit?

There is no upper age limit for apprenticeships, which are available to people at any stage of their working life. We welcome applications from people of all ages, although you must be 16 or over when you start your apprenticeship with us.

Are there any minimum entry requirements?

Entry requirements depend on the level of the apprenticeship and the Framework or Standard that the apprentice will follow. Entry to intermediate apprenticeships (at level 2) generally require Grade 5 (C) or above at GCSE in Maths and English.

What qualifications will I have at the end of the scheme?

This depends on the apprenticeship and the level. Full details will be provided in the job description.

I already have other qualifications, can I still apply?

Apprenticeships are designed to give you skills at either a higher level than your existing qualifications - or in a different discipline. It is possible to do an apprenticeship at the same level, or at a lower level, than a qualification that you already have, but only if it will allow you to gain substantive new skills. The content of the training must be different from any prior qualification or a previous apprenticeship. If you require further advice about eligibility, please contact us.

Can people apply from outside the UK?

Yes, although you would need to have the right to work in the UK and, generally, to have been resident in the UK (or EEA) for at least three years before you start your apprenticeship. If you require specific advice about your eligibility, please contact us.

When will applications open and how can I apply?

This will depend on the apprenticeship you are applying for. Applications must be made through the College Job Applicants webpages.

Is there a relocation allowance or accommodation provided?

The College can provide information and support; however, relocation and accommodation costs must be covered by the apprentice.

How long will the apprenticeship last?

This depends on the apprenticeship, but it will be at least 12 months.

Once the apprenticeship is complete, will the position naturally roll into regular employment, or would I need to reapply for a permanent position when I reach that stage?

Apprenticeships for new staff are offered as fixed-term contracts that are long enough for you to complete your training successfully. Towards the end of your contract you can access support to help you apply for other positions within the College.
