Experimental Solid State Physics is a large and vibrant research group spanning many areas of hard and soft materials physics, from research on the fundamentals of matter and light/matter excitations to applications in energy, optoelectronics and health. We work with state-of-the-art facilities, from high-performance modelling to nanofabrication of new materials and devices, and their characterization and analysis. We have strong links to four doctoral training centres, in plastic electronics, quantum physics, advanced characterization of materials, and theory of materials.
Interdisciplinary research lies at the heart of what we do. We work with vibrant research centres, such as the London Centre for Nanotechnology, the Grantham Institute for Climate Change, the Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering, the Centre for Plasmonics and Metamaterials, and the Energy Futures Lab. Together with our colleagues in Condensed Matter Theory we form the Condensed Matter Physics Section.
