Academic Requirements

Applicants to the CDT must hold at least a Bachelors degree in Physics or a subject closely related to the research in the CDT such as Chemistry, Engineering, Mathematics or Computer Science. The majority of successful applicant hold a Masters degree (MSci or MSc). The minimum degree requirement is 2.1 or its equivalent.

How do I Apply?

Applications should be  submitted online. Please see instructions on how to make an online application.

To apply for a PhD in Controlled Quantum Dynamics CDT, that is, the four year course (MRes + PhD), you need to make an application for a Postgraduate Masters. The programme code is F3U7B. There is no need to enter a proposed research topic or name of supervisor. 

To apply for the one year MRes in Controlled Quantum Dynamics only, you will need to specify this by applying for a Postgraduate Masters and use the code F3U7. There is no need to enter the a proposed research topic or name of supervisor.

In your application you should indicate if you are interested in theory or experimental physics for your PhD. We aim for an even split between theory and experimental students. At the start of your personal statement please also indicate if you are applying for a CQD position with our project partners, as these applications will be considered earlier.

When Should I apply?

The deadline for submitting applications for Controlled Quantum Dynamics will be 6th February 2017 with interviews being held in the week commencing 6th March 2017. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted at least one week before interview with offers being made shortly after interviews.

Candidates for CQD committing to a project with one of our CQD partners can apply at any time and can be interviewed earlier (see the FAQ page for more details). In this case please also contact Miss Veena Dhulipala, when you submit your application. Shortlisted candidates will be contacted at least one week before interview with offers being made shortly after interviews.

Am I eligible for funding?

The CDT offers full funding, that is, tuition fees and living expenses to UK students, and EU students who have been resident in the UK for three years prior to joining the CDT. EU students who do not meet the residency requirement are eligible for fees only. Unfortunately we do not have any funding for Overseas students. However, with effect from the 2010/11 academic year, we are able to fully fund one student from the EU who has not met the residency requirements or an Overseas student. The studentship will cover tuition fees and stipend at EU rates and will be offered competitively. Please  ask our office contact for more details. 

There may be a number of studentships available from DSTL (Defence Science and Technology Laboratory) for research projects on Quantum Sensors and Metrology. If you are interested please indicate this on your application.

Other placement and studentship opportunities may be available.

Open Days - When can I come and meet you?

The CDT will be present at the Physics Department Open Day in the Blackett Building, South Kensington Campus on Monday 5th December 2016. You will get an opportunity to talk to some of our current students from the Centre as well as members of staff. 

The CDT will also be at the Quantum Optics and Laser Science Open Day.
