Governance

Advisory Board

The Centre is afforded external advice and guidance through its Advisory Board. Currently chaired by Admiral the Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL, a former Chief of Defence Staff, the board comprises prominent figures from the arenas of health, industry, academia and defence. Strategic guidance and an ambassadorial function are but two of the roles of this executive oversight committee.

Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Boyce KG GCB OBE DL

Boyce Lord Boyce joined the Royal Navy in 1961 and his subsequent sea commands included two conventional submarines, a nuclear attack submarine and the frigate HMS BRILLIANT. His career culminated in being First Sea Lord and then Chief of Defence Staff before retirement in May 2003. He was elevated to the peerage in June 2003, appointed Lord Warden and Admiral of the Cinque Ports and Constable of Dover Castle in July 2004 and holds, or has held, a number of appointments in various charities and associations, including being Colonel Commandant Special Boat Service, Chairman Royal National Lifeboat Institution, Chairman HMS Victory Preservation Company and Patron Forces in Mind Trust. Imperial College conferred him with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Science in October 2016.


Kate Davies OBE

Davies Kate Davies heads three areas of Direct Commissioning for NHS England: Health & Justice, Armed Forces & their Families and Sexual Assault Referral Centre. As a Director of the national support team, she supports the four regions that commission healthcare services across England; this national role assures quality, consistent and sustained services with a strong focus on health inequalities and outcomes for patients and their families. Kate was previously the Executive Lead for Prison, Detainee and Sexual Assault Referral Centres Healthcare Commissioning for East Midlands and led the Healthcare Commissioning for Prison and Offender Health. In 2009, she was awarded an OBE for her services to disadvantaged communities.


General Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman GBE KCB

Granville-Chapman Fourteen of Sir Timothy Granville-Chapman's 41 years in the Army were as General. After seven years on the Army Board as the Assistant Chief of the General Staff, the Adjutant General and the Commander-in-Chief, he then spent four years on the Defence Board as the Vice Chief of the Defence Staff, running the business of Defence, principally in the operational and capability realms. Sir Timothy has directed the Defence and National Rehabilitation Centre project since October 2009 while holding a variety of other appointments, including that of the Master Gunner St James's Park appointed by The Queen, the 31st incumbent of the post.


David Henson MBE

Henson The Center's veterans' representative, David Henson, joined the Army in 2008 serving with the Royal Engineers after completing his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering. During a tour of Afghanistan in 2011, David was severely wounded and lost both his legs. Following his retirement from the Army, he completed his MSc in Biomedical Engineering at Imperial College London, focusing on improving prosthetic knee joints. In 2014, David was GB Captain for the Invictus Games and appointed MBE for services to the military in the Queen's Birthday Honours List. He is currently undertaking his PhD Bioengineering at Imperial College London, exploring amputee musculoskeletal biomechanics.


Lieutenant General Louis Lillywhite CB, MBE, QHS

LillywhiteLouis Lillywhite retired as surgeon general of the UK Armed Forces in 2010. His 42-year career in the Army included medical appointments as a consultant occupational physician; operational deployments; and command and staff appointments in the Ministry of Defence and in various army and NATO Headquarters. He now works at the Centre on Global Health Security at Chatham House as a Senior Research Fellow, leading on health and conflict research. He also works for the Tribunal Appeal Service and is a member of the Bevan Commission for Wales.


Sir Anthony Newman Taylor

TaylorProfessor of Occupational & Environmental Medicine and Director of Research at the National Heart & Lung Institute and the President’s Envoy for Health, Imperial College London, Sir Anthony Newman Taylor was a Non-Executive Director of Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust between 2012 and 2016 and Principal of the Faculty of Medicine, Imperial College, between 2010 and 2012. Between 1977 and 2010, he was consultant physician at Royal Brompton Harefield NHS Trust, where his appointments included Deputy Chief Executive, Medical Director and Director of Research. Currently, Sir Anthony is chairman of the Independent Medical Expert Group of the Armed Forces Compensation Scheme, chairman of the Workplace Health Expert Committee, an expert scientific advisory group for HSE, and chairman of the Colt Foundation as well as a trustee of the Rayne Foundation.


Sir Keith O'Nions FRS Hon.FREng

O'Nions Imperial College London’s former President & Rector, Sir Keith O’Nions, has held many distinguished roles in academia and government, including serving as the Director General of the UK’s seven Research Councils where he developed the UK science and innovation policy and strategy. He was Chief Scientific Adviser for the UK Ministry of Defence, Head of Earth Sciences at the University of Oxford and Director General, Science and Innovation, in the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills. Throughout his career, Sir Keith has gained a number of honorary degrees and distinguished fellowships. In the 1999 Queen’s Birthday Honours, he received his knighthood for services to earth sciences.


Ian R Stopps CBE, DTech

StoppsIan is former chairman of Raytheon UK; founder, ex-chairman and now senior board advisor of the McLean Group; as well as chairman of the Advisory Board for Loughborough University School of Business and Economics. He is also an advisory board member of British American Business, and was appointed as a Fellow of the Royal Aeronautical Society in 2005. Ian earned a first-class honours degree in Mechanical Engineering from Loughborough University, after which his career included senior executive positions in GE and BFGoodrich, and as chief executive of Lockheed Martin UK. He was appointed CBE for services to the UK Aerospace and Defence Industry in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for 2003; and awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Technology from Loughborough University in 2014.


Professor Keith Willett CBE

Willett A Professor of Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery at the University of Oxford, Keith Willet has extensive experience of trauma care, service redesign and healthcare management. The Department of Health appointed him as National Clinical Director for Trauma Care (2009) and later as National Director for Acute Episodes of Care to NHS England (2012). His clinical practice has been exclusively with the immediate treatment, rehabilitation and reconstructive surgery of patients sustaining musculo-skeletal and soft tissue injuries. Keith was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the 2016 New Year Honours for services to the NHS.

Operations Committee

The Centre's Operations Committee comprises the Centre Director, Clinical Priority Leads, Clinical Lead, Educational Lead and the Operations Manager. The monthly Committee meeting conducts the internal management of the Centre to ensure the financial governance and integration research.

Professor Anthony M J Bull, FREng, Centre Director

BullAnthony's interest in Blast Injuries stems from a strong history of clinical collaborations and the application of bioengineering to real clinical need in order to have an impact on health and wellbeing. In addition to CBIS, Anthony leads the Musculoskeletal Medical Engineering Centre, a multi-million pound, multi-disciplinary and multi-investigator research activity at Imperial College. His administrative roles include Head of Department of Bioengineering and Director (Engineering) of the Michael Uren Biomedical Engineering Research Hub.


Dr Emma Burke, Centre Manager

Burke Emma gained a BSc.Ed from the University of Limerick, Ireland before undertaking postgraduate studies in the UK. She received a Msc in Forensic Engineering and Science and a PhD in Explosives Chemistry from Cranfield University, Shrivenham. Emma has blast studies expertise in the Defence and Aerospace Industry and experience in university administration. Emma is responsible for the operational management of the Centre, including the management of its financial resources, key stakeholder relationships and staff.


Professor (Col) Jon Clasper CBE, Clinical Lead

Clasper Jon qualified from Glasgow University in 1986 and completed his basic surgical training in the armed forces. His higher surgical training included a year at the Major Trauma Centre in Baltimore, USA, and 3 years at Oxford. His clinical post is Consultant Trauma and Upper Limb Surgeon at Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust. As Defence Professor in Trauma and Orthopaedics, Jon is responsible for the orthopaedic research focus of the British military which is a joint post between the military and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. A founding member of Imperial Blast, Jon was appointed as a Visiting Professor in Bioengineering at Imperial College London in 2010.


Dr Spyros Masouros, Trauma Biomechanics

Masouros Spyros is a lecturer in Trauma Biomechanics in the Department of Bioengineering. Spyros received his first degree in Mechanical Engineering in 2004 from the National Technical University of Athens, Greece. He received his PhD in Biomechanics from Imperial College, London in 2008. Spyros specialises in Finite Element modelling of human joints, material characterisation of soft tissues of joints, physical models of lower limb injury and their mitigation and the design of athroscopic devices.


Professor Alison McGregor, Musculoskeletal Biodynamics

McGregor Alison is a Professor of Musculoskeletal Biodynamics in the Department of Surgery and Cencer where she manages the Human Performance Group. Alison trained as a physiotherapist at King's College Hospital, qualifying in 1989, and then studied Biomedical Engineering at Surrey University which led to a PhD project in spinal mechanics and low back pain at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School. Her research focuses on the musculoskeletal system with respect to mechanisms of injury, effects of injury on function and rehabilitation and injury management.


Dr Bill Proud, Shock Physics

Proud Bill originally trained as an electrochemist in the field of biosensors and has been conducting research on energetic materials and shock wave science since 1994. His interest in fast reactions became focussed on understanding the processes occurring on different length (molecular, grain-sized, macroscopic) and time-scales (nanoseconds to milliseconds) in materials. Bill's main interests are high-speed photography, ignition processes in energetic materials, ballistics, shock physics, blast effects, high-strain rate properties of energetic and inert materials. Bill is the Director of the Institute of Shock Physics, Imperial College London.

Research Strategy Group

The Research Strategy Group is the primary mode of exchange between the Centre, including the Clinical Lead and its sponsor. A quarterly update is provided focussing on each area of Centre research and their related outputs with specific reference to technology transfer.

Dr Hari Arora, Lung Mechanics

Arora Hari undertook his undergraduate studies between 2004 and 2008 in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College where he later completed his PhD entitled "Blast loading of fibre reinforced polymer composite structures". His current research interests focus on lung mechanics involving both macro- and microscale evaluation of thoracic structural response to blast. The aim of Hari's research is to improve the understanding of underlying failure mechanisms occurring within the lungs to improve both injury treatment and prevention.


Professor Anthony Bull, Musculoskeletal Mechanics

Bull Anthony's interest in Blast Injuries stems from a strong history of clinical collaborations and the application of bioengineering to real clinical need in order to have an impact on health and wellbeing. In addition to CBIS, Anthony leads the Centre for Medical Engineering Solutions in Osteoarthritis and the Sports Innovation Challenge, both multi-million pound funded research activities at Imperial College. His administrative roles include Head of Department of Bioengineering and Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.


Professor (Col) Jon Clasper, Trauma and Orthopaedics

Clasper Jon's clinical post is Consultant Trauma and Upper Limb Surgeon at Frimley Park NHS Foundation Trust. As Defence Professor in Trauma and Orthopaedics, he is responsible for the orthopaedic research focus of the British military which is a joint post between the military and The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Jon was a founding member of Imperial Blast. He is the author of a number of book chapters and of specific papers on trauma and upper limb surgery and has gained doctorates in both Medicine and Philosophy. In 2010 Jon was appointed as a Visiting Professor in Bioengineering at Imperial College London. 


Dr Mazdak Ghajari, Traumatic Brain Injury

Ghajari Mazdak obtained his BSc (1st class hons) and MSc (distinction) degrees in Mechanical Engineering. Before joining Imperial College in 2007 to undertake a PhD, Mazdak worked in automotive oil and gas industries as a design engineer. His PhD research, which was part of a collaborative EU project MYMOSA, focused on the design of novel test methods for improving helmet standards. Mazdak s current research focuses on understanding the biomechanics of Traumatic Brain injusy (TBI) and desiogning advanced protective devices.


Dr Andrei S Kozlov, Auditory Neuroscience and Biophysics

Kozlov Andrei’s research in sensory neuroscience has focused on the auditory system. He examined the biophysics of mechanoelectrical transduction in the inner ear (at the Rockefeller University, New York) and investigated computations in auditory cortex (at the University of California, San Diego). In 2014, Andrei joined in the Department of Bioengineering at Imperial College London where he founded the Laboratory of Auditory Neuroscience and Biophysics. Research interests of this new laboratory are centred on two areas: how the inner ear converts sounds into electrical signals and how auditory cortex interprets these signals.

Dr Andrew Phillips, Structural Biomechanics

Phillips Andrew gained his MEng degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Edinburgh in 2001. He went on to study Orthopaedic Engineering, gaining a PhD, titled Numeric al Modelling of the Pelvis and Acetabular Construct following Hip Arthroplasty also from the University of Edinburgh in 2005. Andrew specialises in structural biomechanics, and in particular the development of combined musculoskeletal and finite element modelling approaches. His most recent work investigates the application of optimisation strategies in structural engineering and skeletal biomechanics.

Professor Sara Rankin, Leukocyte and Stem Cell Biology

Rankin Sara is Professor of Leukocyte and Stem Cell Biology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. Sara obtained a first class Hons Degree and PhD in Pharmacology from Kings College, London. She undertook postdoctoral positions in the Department of Medicine, UCSD and at the Imperial Cancer Research Fund (now Cancer Research UK). Her research focuses on understanding the impact of the bone marrow in inflammatory diseases and elucidating the molecular mechanisms regulating the exit of leukocytes and stem cells from the bone marrow.


Dr Tobias Reichenbach, Hearing and Sensory Neuroscience

ReichenbachTobias graduated from the Ludwig-Maximilians University in Germany in 2008 following research on theoretical aspects of non-equilibrium pattern formation and statistical physics. Tobias joined Imperial College in 2013 after postdoctoral training in computational neuroscience and the biophysics of hearing at the Rockefeller University in New York. He is interested in problems at the interface of physics and biology and much of his research focuses on hearing. Tobias aims to identify the underlying biophysical specialisations and investigate how the ear's strategies can be employed in speech and hearing technology. 


Professor David Sharp, Neurology

SharpDavid is a National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Professor and honorary consultant neurologist with a special interest in Taumatic Brain Injury (TBI). David runs a multidisciplinary traumatic brain injury clinic at Charing Cross Hospital and directs a program of research investigating the impact of TBI on cognitive function. His research uses advanced neuroimaging to study brain network function both in healthy individuals and those following brain injury.
