Project Overview

Polymer composite sandwich panels are being utilized increasingly as primary load-carrying components in aircraft and aerospace structures. Serving in this capacity, these structures are subjected to impacts such as tool drops, hail, bird strikes, and runway debris. So the understanding of their behaviour under impact conditions is extremely important for the design and manufacturing of these engineering structures, since impact problems are directly related to structural integrity and safety requirements.

In this research, the composite sandwich panels to be evaluated will focus primarily on Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymers (CFRP) and Glass Fibre Reinforced Polymers (GFRP) for skin materials. Different polymer types and different density polymer foam materials will be used for core materials in the sandwich constructions. Many new constructions of CFRP, GFRP and other skin materials are widely used in composite sandwich structures. The type of weaves, whether 2D fabrics, 3D woven fabrics or co-woven (two types of fibres) fabrics, also provide a broad scope for improved impact response investigations.
