Borrowing a laptop

Library laptops The Central Library has 36 laptops for Imperial students to borrow for up to 4 hours.

You can borrow a laptop from the laptop cabinet in the room next to the Information Hub. Each time you borrow you will be asked to agree to the terms of use.

Laptops may be used on the South Kensington campus, just log in with your College username and password. Remember to save your work to your home directory as all data will be wiped on return.

In the event of non-return, you will be charged for complete replacement at a cost of £900.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge and the details of your debt may be passed on to College Finance. Charges for damage may also apply.

Please report any damage or faults to library staff.

Our laptops come with pre-installed software and we welcome your suggestions for additions based on the criteria in our Student PC software policy.

Laptop terms of use

By borrowing a laptop, you agree to the terms and conditions.

  • I will return the laptop to the laptop cabinet by the return time.
  • I understand that the return time may be reduced for Library and College closure periods.
  • I am solely responsible for the laptop while it is in my care and will not lend it to anyone else.
  • If I fail to return the laptop, or it is damaged whilst in my possession, I will be charged for the repair or a replacement and the details of my debt may be passed on to College Finance (replacement cost - £900.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge).
  • If I return a laptop after an invoice has been issued I will be required to pay the £30.00 administration charge.
  • I will report any damage or faults to a member of library staff.
  • I will comply with College Information Systems Security policies
  • I understand that documents, images, etc., saved to the laptop will be erased, and that Imperial College London is not responsible for backing up this data.

Borrowing an iPad

students using an iPad The Library has a number of iPads for Imperial students to borrow.

  • Central Library - 30
  • Hammersmith Campus Library - 10
  • St Mary's Fleming Library - 10

You may borrow an iPad for up to 14 days - just visit the library desk, where library staff will ask you to complete a form agreeing to the terms of use.

You can only return iPads at the the library from which they were borrowed, during staffed hours. In the event of non-return, you will be charged for complete replacement at a cost of £370.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge. Other charges for broken and lost parts apply.

Central Library iPads come pre-installed with a small number of apps. In addition you may download others from the App catalog.

At Hammersmith and St Mary's our iPads are pre-installed with the apps  listed in the App catalog. You may download further apps but they will be deleted when the iPad is returned.

Replacement  costs:

Non-return or damage of cable: £15.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge
Non-return or damage of plug: £20.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge
Non-return or damage of case: £20.00 plus a £30.00 administration charge

  • I accept that costs for any content I purchase for the iPad (music, books, apps, etc.) cannot be returned or refunded by Imperial College London and that this content will be erased from the iPad upon return, and that Imperial College London is not responsible for backing up this data.
